More Ways to Save Energy and Money
Our customers’ interest in energy efficiency is growing, and so has our commitment to delivering programs that help you manage energy use at home and work.
In our ongoing effort to help you use energy more wisely, we have filed a seven-year plan with the Kentucky Public Service Commission to expand five of our existing energy efficiency programs and create three new ones.
If approved, the programs will be introduced to you later this year.
For any new or expanded energy efficiency program, we use feedback from a variety of customer groups and representatives.
This helps us to fully assess our program offerings and determine the types of programs you want.
Whether you are a residential or commercial customer, if our plan is approved, you will have more tools, incentives and resources available to help you better manage energy use.
Our plan includes:
-- Enhancements to our Demand Conservation Program;
-- Increased incentives for customers who perform Residential Energy Audits and make energy-efficient home improvements;
-- Increased availability of our low-income assistance WeCare program; and
-- Assistance for our commercial customers to tailor their energy-efficient improvements to qualify for rebates.
In creating our seven-year plan, we regularly met with representatives from the Governor’s Office of Energy Policy, the Attorney General, low-income advocacy groups, governmental environmental protection agencies and businesses, among others.
While our energy efficiency programs are available to help each residential and commercial customer, it is important to look at the bigger picture of what all of our collective energy-saving actions mean, too.
Our existing energy efficiency programs have already paid dividends in energy savings.
You have helped us achieve a cumulative energy savings of approximately 207,900 megawatt-hours, natural gas savings of 4 million cubic feet, and a cumulative demand reduction of 182 megawatts — enough demand reduction to avoid the need for a natural gas-fired turbine.
Based on your participation, and that of our other customers, we anticipate that our new and expanded programs could achieve a 500-megawatt demand reduction by 2017.
To put that in perspective, one megawatt supplies enough energy to power more than 700 typical residential customer homes for one month.
Besides helping you use energy more wisely, our programs offset increasing energy demand that leads to the need to build more generation.
They also provide more of a buffer for rate increases caused by federal environmental regulations to which we are required by law to comply.
Our filing is another important step in our efforts to help you save energy and money and make a positive environmental difference.
We’ll continue to keep you informed about how and when you can take advantage of the programs in today’s filing.
You can also learn more of the details by reading the official press release.
In the meantime, also take a look at our current energy efficiency programs to see what is available today.
The bottom line is: We hear you, we’re listening, and we’re proud to partner with you to better manage your energy use.
