10 Simple Ways to Save on Summer Cooling Costs

Monday, June 18, 2012 Posted by Brian Phillips
The heat is on in Kentucky and warmer temperatures can mean higher energy usage during the summer months. Now is the time to act and take control of your monthly energy costs. The task may seem like a daunting one, but there are a variety of low- and no-cost ways to save. We're here to help.

1. Remember that insulation and sealing air leaks can help improve your home's energy performance in the summer as well as the winter because they help you keep the cool air you have paid to cool inside your home.

2. Perform an online home energy analysis to get a better idea of where your energy use is going and learn what steps you can take to cut usage and costs.

3. Invite one of our certified technicians into your home to conduct an on-site home energy analysis and you'll receive a list of energy-saving measures that are tailored to your home. In addition, our technician will install energy-saving devices such as compact fluorescent bulbs and water restrictors.

4. Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units but do not block the airflow. Place a room air conditioner on the north side of the house. A unit that operates in the shade uses less energy than one operating in the sun.

5. Do not place lamps or electronic equipment, such as a TV set near your home's thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than it needs to.

6. Use a fan even when your air conditioner is running so you can spread the cooled air more effectively throughout your home without having to adjust the thermostat.

7. Adjust your home's thermostat up two degrees in the summer.

8. Replace your furnace filter monthly (or according to the manufacturer's recommendation) and get your A/C tested and tuned-up to optimize its performance.

9. Get paid to help us manage peak demand on the hottest days of summer. Join our Demand Conservation program to earn bill credits June through September each year.

10. Keep curtains, drapes and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day to prevent the sun's rays from heating your home.

Until next time, stay cool, and keep using energy wisely.
