An ordinary day on the green was anything but routine for Duane Manska, storage operator at Muldraugh.

Manska was at a golf course in Louisville when his girlfriend’s father, Rick Geist, collapsed. Geist was unresponsive, but breathing, so Manska called 911. While on the phone, however, Manska realized Geist had quit breathing, so he began CPR and continued for several minutes until the golf course’s EMT arrived and transported Geist to the hospital.

“It was a nerve-wracking experience, but my training kicked in and I did what I had to do,” said Manska.

Thanks to Manska’s quick actions, Geist has now fully recovered.

The experience led Frank Newton, safety and technical training consultant, to nominate Manska for the Southern Gas Association’s Meritorious Award for his life-saving actions. Those who know him on the job aren’t surprised by his heroic behavior.

“Duane is a model employee who has always been very safety-oriented,” said Dennis Probus, team leader of Storage Operations at Muldraugh. “He’s one who won’t look the other way and will help whenever needed.”
