Take a look at the latest video in our "Business in Your Backyard" series, which profiles Mine Shield, a local Kentucky company that does business around the world.
As a low-cost energy provider, LG&E and KU play an important role in helping boost Kentucky's standing as the place to do business. Our video series takes a closer look at how we serve local companies and why they're important to the Commonwealth.
Mine Shield, a business that began in a home in Bardstown, Ky., builds refuge chambers for use by mining organizations around the world.
Now located in Lancaster, Ky., the company follows stringent Mine Safety and Health Administration guidelines, which require refuge chambers to be able to supply oxygen for eight to 30 people underground for at least five days in case of an accident.
In the video, CEO Connie Hendren shares how our relationship with the organization and our low rates helped Mine Shield stay in the area.
“We considered several other locations before deciding to build our organization in Kentucky,” said Hendren. “After looking at utility rates in other states and then looking at what the previous owner of the building where we’re located was paying, we feel we are able to use the services of Kentucky Utilities for probably half of what it would cost in other states.”
Previous organizations profiled include Carbide Industries, the University of Louisville, and Flex Films USA.
