A Greener Habitat, Supported By LG&E

Over the weekend, we had the pleasure of helping dedicate a brand new, energy-efficient home that was constructed by Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville.

It’s one of 23 homes that Habitat plans to build or rehabilitate this year, and the families who are waiting for their new homes have an extra advantage to look forward to: lower energy consumption.

Specifically, Habitat received a $50,000 grant from LG&E to support the cost of incorporating ENERGY STAR® requirements in all the homes the agency plans to build or rehab in Louisville this year.

ENERGY STAR-qualified housing must surpass strict energy efficiency requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. In order to be qualified, all houses are assessed to ensure the construction and combined features provide a more energy efficient, comfortable home that exceeds standard construction.

The combined features may include effective insulation, high-performance windows, tightly-constructed ducts, efficient heating and cooling equipment, and efficient products including but not limited to, major appliances, ventilation fans, and lighting.

Because incorporating these energy efficient enhancements means higher costs on the front-end for a nonprofit organization like Habitat, our funding was immediately put to effective use, and enables Habitat to do even more good work for more families in our community.

Our grant also expands on our existing partnership with Habitat. Last year, LG&E volunteers helped build Habitat’s first LEED-certified home in Louisville as part of our statewide “Day of Caring” campaign.

In addition, the organization continues to receive rebates for energy-efficient construction qualified through our ENERGY STAR New Homes Program.

Habitat builds homes that build stronger communities. At LG&E, we fully support their mission to build safe, affordable – and now energy efficient – homes. It’s just another way our energies go to serving you.
