Employees roll up their sleeves for annual Day of Caring
Friday, June 14, 2013
More than 220 of our employee volunteers and their families are rolling up their sleeves this weekend to help local communities as part of LG&E and KU’s ninth annual Day of Caring. Volunteers will lend nonprofit agencies a hand by helping them paint, mulch, assemble toiletries and clean up the banks of the Ohio River. Other volunteers are collecting nonperishable items at their local facilities for donation. This will impact 14 agencies located in: Louisville, Lexington, Elizabethtown, Middlesboro, Morganfield, Richmond, Shelbyville, Somerset, Mercer County, Trimble County and Norton, Va.
“LG&E and KU employees are committed to improving the quality of life in the communities in which we live and work,” said Laura Douglas, vice president of Corporate Responsibility and Community Affairs.

Douglas says Day of Caring gives us an opportunity to assist nonprofits with projects that might otherwise go undone without the help. It also brings employees together from different departments to work together on a single project.
Day of Caring is part of our annual employee giving campaign called Power of One, which includes monetary giving and volunteer work. Since 2005, more than 2,200 of our employees and family members have put in nearly 9,000 man-hours at 58 locations across the state. Power of One also has raised nearly $11 million in that time to support hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the LG&E and KU service territories. More than 70% of our employees participate in Power of One through payroll deduction – a participation rate more than twice the national average.
Volunteers also will work on Saturday, June 29, in Morganfield for Union County YMCA’s “Healthy Kids Day.” They will put together goody bags filled with items such as jump ropes, Frisbees, chalk and outside sports equipment.
