Temperatures are rising, but your energy bill doesn’t have to
Friday, June 28, 2013
The last thing you’d expect an energy company to say is “use less energy.” But that’s exactly what we want you to do. Help us reduce energy during times when energy use is at its highest on the hottest days of summer, and we’ll provide you with credits on your summer utility bills. Sign up for our Demand Conservation program and earn credits!
To get started, head to our Demand Conservation website and sign up for the voluntary program that’s at no additional cost to you. Then one of our technicians will come out and install a device that helps us better manage peak energy demand in the summer.
We can install a device on your central air conditioner, heat pump, electric water heater and in-ground pool pump. The more devices you have installed, the more summer energy credits you’ll receive.
This device allows us to safely and briefly cycle your air conditioner’s compressor during peak energy use periods from June through September.
The device is activated by a radio signal – just like the radio in your car – that interrupts the thermostat signal to the compressor on your air conditioner or heat pump. The air conditioner fan continues to circulate the cool air already in the home. We only operate the program when it’s absolutely necessary and no more than 20 times per year. Our customers who are already enrolled in the program say they barely notice a difference in the temperature inside their homes.
But what they do notice is the credits that are applied to their summer bills. Specifically, customers can earn up to $5 bill credits each month, June through September, for each installed air conditioner or heat pump, and $2 for each water heater or in-ground pool pump.
More than 160,000 of our customers are currently participating in Demand Conservation. This helps offset part of our customers’ growing energy demand, which can help delay the need for constructing additional generation.
The program is getting a lot of attention. Just check out our recent interview on WHAS 11’s Great Day Live!
Until next time, keep using energy wisely.
