With the holidays over and the guests out of the house, many are turning their attention to another annual tradition — the New Year’s resolution.

While we can’t motivate someone to go to the gym, LG&E and KU can inspire you to save energy this year with a variety of energy efficiency programs available to residential electric customers.

Here are five energy-saving resolutions for the New Year:

1. Perform a home energy analysis: We offer two types: online and on-site. The online home energy analysis takes about 10 minutes and provides a customized report that includes recommendations on how to save energy. Or, sign up for an on-site home energy analysis and a certified technician will assess your home’s energy efficiency. Financial incentives are also available to eligible customers who take action to make their homes more energy efficient as a result of an on-site analysis.

2. Recycle that old, inefficient fridge or freezer: The fastest and easiest way to drop some (household) weight is to recycle that old, inefficient fridge or freezer running year-round in your garage or basement. Make an appointment, and we will pick-up, haul away and properly recycle your working energy hog. In return, you’ll receive $30 per recycled appliance within six to eight weeks.

3. Apply for a home energy rebate: We offer monetary rewards ranging from $50 to $300 to help customers offset the purchasing costs of certain ENERGY STAR® certified appliances, high-efficiency HVAC systems and qualified window film.

4. Enroll in Demand Conservation: Get paid to help better manage peak summer energy demand. Even though it’s winter, we can still install a device on your home’s central air conditioning unit or heat pump. In return, we will credit your monthly utility bill, June through September.

5. Check your HVAC system’s air filter: Check your HVAC system’s air filter monthly and replace as necessary, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. A dirty filter will slow air flow, making your system work harder to keep you warm in winter.

We're often asked why -- as a company that's in the business of selling elecricity and natural gas -- we encourage our customers to use less of our products.

For us, the answer is simple.

Over the years, customers have expressed their desire to become more energy efficient, and we've responded by offering a variety of programs that allow you to become a better energy manager of your home or business.

There are two major factors that contribute to your monthly energy use: the weather and your individual energy-use habits. We want to provide you with the tools and resources you need to help better manage energy usage and reduce energy consumption.

In turn, reducing energy usage offsets annual customer energy demand growth that can help delay the need for additional generation and help ensure power reliability during times of peak energy usage (like on the hottest days in summer and the coldest days of winter).

Our portfolio of energy efficiency programs is designed to help you use energy wisely.

For example, with our Home Energy Rebates program, we'll provide $50 to $300 to help offset the purchasing costs of certain ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers and heat pump water heaters, as well as certain high-efficiency HVAC systems and window film.

According to ENERGY STAR®, refrigerator models manufactured 30 to 40 years ago use nearly two times the amount of energy each year compared to today's high-efficient ENERGY STAR® certified refrigerators, which use approximately 500 kilowatt-hours annually (about half of one-month's usage for a typical residential customer).

Upgrading to a new energy-efficient model can help you save energy, we want to help make energy-efficient options more affordable.

We officially launched our Home Energy Rebates program this year, and customers’ interest in the program has been phenomenal.

We’ve also worked hard to develop relationships with the locally-owned and national retailers across our service territories.
