Additional aid coming to agencies helping families with winter home heating

Monday, February 24, 2014 Posted by Unknown 0 comments
Despite a warm-up this weekend, the mercury is dropping once again as the chill of the winter season keeps a firm hold across the area. Winter 2014 is trending colder overall, with January and February to date each coming in about 35% colder than last year. The extreme conditions put a freeze on the finances of many who are still struggling to deal with the cold weather’s impact on their heating bills.

We want to assist community action agencies’ efforts in taking some of the strain off residents needing assistance. Today, Kentucky Utilities Company and Old Dominion Power Company announced they’re contributing more than $90,000 to 20 community action agencies across the utilities’ service territories. Community action agencies in Barbourville, Bowling Green, Covington, Flemingsburg, Frankfort, Harlan, Hopkinsville, Jackson, Jamestown, LaGrange, Lebanon, Lexington, Manchester, Mayfield, Owensboro, Pineville, Richmond, Shelbyville and West Liberty in Kentucky, as well as Norton, Va., are receiving the funds.

“We know residents and nonprofits alike have been feeling the pinch of the weather’s impact this season,” said John P. Malloy, vice president of Customer Services for KU and ODP. “By working with the Community Action Council and other community action agencies in Kentucky and the Appalachian Community Action and Development Agency in Virginia, it’s our hope they’ll be able to use these grant dollars to reach out to those having trouble making ends meet right now.”

The aid is part of an additional $200,000 we’ve identified to be allocated to community action groups, shelters and other nonprofit organizations within its service territories — specifically to address heightened concerns stemming from the unusually cold season.

In addition to providing the grants, we are also willing to work with residential customers challenged by the cold weather’s impact on their utility bills. Residential customers anticipating difficulty paying their bills are encouraged to contact customer service representatives, who will address their individual situation. LG&E customers can call (502) 589-1444 and KU and ODP residential customers can dial (800) 981-0600.

Shelters in Louisville and Lexington to receive $50,000 donation

Thursday, February 6, 2014 Posted by Unknown 0 comments
Many of us are exhausted with this winter's freezing temperatures, but it's all exhausting vital resources as well. Even though there is still a month of winter left, extreme conditions have already dried up funding for essential programs needed to serve the homeless population. Also, other vulnerable community members who need assistance are struggling to make it through the bitterly cold season. In the Louisville area alone, funds for shelters’ White Flag nights, which provide additional dollars per person to participating shelters when temperatures dip below 35 degrees, are no longer available. But while the dollars have ceased, cold temperatures and icy conditions have not, and bills to provide common necessities to those in need keep adding up.

In an effort to ease the deficit, our company is donating nearly $50,000 to a dozen shelters and day centers across the utilities’ service territory.  LG&E is also donating funds to the Coalition for the Homeless in Louisville, a nonprofit advocacy organization whose members serve the needs of Louisville’s homeless population.

“From the beginning of October 2013 through the end of December 2,700 more people were assisted through White Flag than during the same time period in 2012,” said Natalie Harris, executive director of Louisville’s Coalition for the Homeless.  “With that kind of increased need for services, the relief dollars from LG&E and KU will absolutely make it easier for the day centers and emergency shelters throughout our community to meet the needs of the homeless population under the current very difficult circumstances.”

The organizations receiving funding each provide emergency shelter and meals to those in need. Some also provide overnight beds and clothing assistance as well. Our donation dollars received by  organizations are not paid for by the utilities’ customers.

Customer Bill Help

In addition to working with area shelters, LG&E and KU are also willing to work with residential customers challenged by the cold weather’s impact on their utility bills. Residential customers anticipating difficulty paying their bills are encouraged to contact customer care representatives, who will address their individual situation. LG&E residential customers can call (502) 589-1444.  KU residential customers can dial (800) 981-0600.

LG&E, KU and ODP increase match for heating assistance programs

Monday, January 28, 2013 Posted by Brian Phillips
With winter in full swing, our community's most vulnerable citizens can sometimes struggle to pay for essential services like heat and power.

Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company provide electric and natural gas service to customers in more than 90 counties in Kentucky, and our Old Dominion Power Company provides electric service to customers in five counties in Virginia.

Within our service footprint, we partner year-round with non-profit and community organizations to provide utility bill assistance and weatherization services to help those in need. This support is even more critical during cold weather months.

We also encourage customers who have the desire to help those in need to make voluntary contributions to our heating assistance programs, which support our most vulnerable community members who may be in dire financial situations, leaving a family with no heat or the immediate prospect of no heat:

--For LG&E customers: Community Winterhelp is a nonprofit organization supported by LG&E and managed by an independent third party, the Louisville Urban League, and fellow area assistance agencies.

-- For KU customers: The WinterCare Energy Fund is a nonprofit organization supported by KU and managed by an independent third party, the Community Action Council.
-- For ODP customers: The WinterShare Fund is a nonprofit organization supported by ODP, and managed by area nonprofit agencies.

LG&E, KU and ODP match customer donations each month and forward the entire amount to agencies for distribution in the counties we serve. Through March 31, we'll make contributions go even further, matching customers' donations $1-for-$1.

How you can donate:

We make it easy for you to support those in need. You can donate by making a recurring monthly pledge or a one-time contribution that can be added to their monthly bills. You can also donate online at my.lge-ku.com after registering your utility account. LG&E customers can also make a donation to Community Winterhelp by visiting www.communitywinterhelp.org.

Our heating assistance programs have helped thousands of area families in need.

With your support, we can ensure those in need continue to receive the assistance they need.
