Bernheim and LG&E: every tree tells a story
Wednesday, July 18, 2012
Nearly 60 trees, and stories, have taken root in Bernheim Forest and Arboretum’s Children’s Play Garden, thanks to a Plant for the Planet grant from LG&E.
Students from Kentucky’s Governor’s Scholars program helped plant the trees, which are the focal point of a self-guided walking trail that showcases trees of historical, cultural and regional significance. The effort is part of Bernheim’s Every Tree Tells a Story project.
The trail will commemorate individuals and events that are significant in our nation's history and in our local communities, and through storytelling, communicate the importance of trees in our lives.
For more than 80 years, Bernheim has connected people with nature, and we hope the trees funded by our grant will benefit this forest for future generations to come.
LG&E and KU’s Plant for the Planet is a matching-grant program that targets successful tree planting programs organized by non-profit organizations and local government agencies throughout the LG&E and KU service territories.
Plant for the Planet funds only support non-invasive tree species and all applicants must demonstrate that mature trees resulting from their efforts will not interfere with utility lines.
Since the program’s inception, Plant for the Planet grants have funded the planting of more than 20,000 trees across our service territory.
Bernheim is a steward to more than 14,500 acres of natural lands and is home to more than 8,000 labeled species of regional native and non-invasive plants. Learn more about Bernheim at http://www.bernheim.org/.
