When it comes to family fun, the many festivals sponsored by LG&E or KU have got you covered — whether it’s a country ham breakfast, kayak racing, balloon glows or antique car shows.

In the coming weeks, these celebrations will get into full gear so check out the lineup of fun:

Harlan County Shriner’s Horse Show and Fair (Aug. 3-4) — Shriner Fairgrounds in Putney, Ky. will host walking, riding, saddle-bred, pole-bending events and more. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children. Begins 7 p.m. each night. Children’s activities available. For information, contact John Chaney, 606-589-0003.

Million Dollar Hole-in-One (Aug. 10–19) — Take a shot at a million dollars during this event to benefit Lexington Sister Cities’ scholarship program and other causes. Site is Lake Side Golf Course in Lexington. Daily prizes also awarded. For information, call Kay Sargent, 859-258-3137.

Kentucky State Fair (Aug. 16-26) — Don't miss this annual summer tradition. While you're there, be sure to check out LG&E and KU's booth for giveaways, information on how to use energy wisely, and a creative look at how we've been providing electric and natural gas service to the communities we serve for more than a century.

Downtown Lexington Film Festival (Aug. 24) — Visit Lexington’s Triangle Park at dusk to take part in a weekly film showing at no charge. KU is sponsoring the film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” on Aug. 24.

Heartland Festival in the Park (Aug. 24-25) — Located at Freeman Lake Park in Elizabethtown, the Heartland Festival is all about food and family fun, from a parade to canoe and kayak races to a balloon glow.

Central City Music Festival (Aug. 28 to Sept. 1) — A gospel fest, carnival, live music by The Duke Boys and a “Cruise-in” antique car show are just some of the fun at this downtown Central City event. For information, call Central City Tourist and Convention Commission, 270-754-9603.

Trimble County Apple Festival (Sept. 8-9) — Visit Bedford, Ky. for the two-day event which showcases crafts, food and exhibits along the courthouse square.

Kentucky Bourbon Festival (Sept. 11-16) — From black tie galas to historical tours, there’s something for all ages and interests in the bourbon capital of the world, Bardstown, Ky.

Horse Cave Heritage Festival (Sept. 14-15) — The festival honors the rich heritage of Horse Cave, including many of its buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Attendees can enjoy two stages of music, vendors, a car show and other fun events.

Marion County Country Ham Days (Sept. 29-30) — Located in Lebanon, Ky., this year’s event will serve 6,000 pounds of country ham in addition to a “Ham Jam” street dance, 5K run, arts and crafts plus more.

This sampling of sponsorships and festivals across the state is one of the many reasons Kentucky is such a great place to live, work and raise a family.
