5 tips for creating eco-friendly, elegant holiday décor
Friday, December 20, 2013
Need some last minute holiday decorating ideas before family and friends arrive? Think eco-friendly! Crafting your décor from green
materials can give it a refreshing, modern spin that also saves environmental
resources.
1. Think homemade –
One of the keys to eco-friendly holiday décor lies in repurposing things around
you and being creative enough to find ways to include them in your decorations.
Whether it’s nature, old clothing or even food, materials are right in front of
you.
2. Look outside –
Bringing the outdoors in and decorating with nature brings the season to life
and smells good, too! Spraying pine cones with glitter, using evergreens for
wreaths and in vases or jars and making a twig basket are all examples of
incorporating natural items as part of your holiday theme.
3. Include edibles
– Cinnamon sticks, popcorn, dried figs, apples and oranges taste good and make
festive additions as holiday decorations. Orange peels can be shaped into
spirals, and all of them can be strung together as a unique holiday garland or
put in a bowl as part of a centerpiece.
4. Consider LED – LED
lights use less energy than incandescent and are offered in plenty of colors
and styles. LED candles are made of real wax and flicker like a real candle,
but don’t pose a fire hazard, don’t have to be replaced and are safer for
indoor air quality.
5. Sustainable over
seasonal – The holiday season will come and go, but the decorations you use
don’t have to. Find longer-term sustainable alternatives that will have purpose
beyond the season. For example, a rosemary or other living tree will outlive a
traditional Christmas tree and provide herbs for meals during and after the
holiday.
Remember to use these and other green holiday decorating
ideas to give your home and the environment a special sparkle this season.
