LG&E and KU's Bird Feed: State's First Falcon Webcam Offers Public a Chance to View Raptors Up Close

It's not often you get an opportunity to watch a peregrine falcon in action. These fast-flying raptors soar to speeds of up to 70 mph and build their nests high above the ground.

But now a new reality show has hatched, allowing the public to see these beautiful birds up close.

We’ve partnered with Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to launch the state’s first peregrine falcon web camera, located at our Mill Creek Generating Station in a falcon nest box 300 feet above the ground.

There’s been a lot of activity in the nest box since February 21. Two falcons, known as a nesting pair, are currently occupying the nest box. The female falcon has laid five eggs, and the eggs are expected to begin hatching in the coming days.

“We are excited about this project because it gives us a chance to bring the outdoors into everyday classrooms, homes and lives. This web camera provides an opportunity to follow the lives of these birds from an egg until they take to the skies,” said KDFWR Nongame Branch Coordinator Sunni Carr.

We have a long-standing partnership with KDFWR in commitment to support Kentucky’s peregrine falcon population. In fact, KDFWR has placed nest boxes at our Trimble County, Cane Run, Mill Creek, Ghent and E.W. Brown plants. Over the last 20 years, our employees have ensured the next boxes at our plants provide a safe setting for the peregrine falcons.
